Let There be Night at the Racine Unified Planetarium
(10/28/2009) Come join Racine Unified for the school year's first public planetarium program, Let There be Night, on Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. This particular program has been shown in planetariums nationwide to celebrate 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy and will be held in the newly remodeled planetarium at Gifford Elementary School, 8332 Northwestern Avenue.
This family show takes the viewers back in time to explore the evening sky with Galileo and then fast-forwards to the future to contrast with the current evening sky. Currently, nature's balance between day and night is at risk as errant and excessive outdoor lighting challenges our nightscape. While astronomers have initially raised concerns knowing now the value of the night extends well beyond the visual sight. Let There be Night will also examine the associated problems and offer reasonable solutions.
The program will conclude with a view of Racine's current night sky and free star maps will be available.
Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling (262) 631-7093. Due to limited seating, reservations cannot be accepted for organizations or groups. At the school, please park in the east parking lot and enter through the southeast doors.
